The first thing you will do when you arrive? Stop for a moment in the garden. From the hillside you look out over the green valley and the rolling hilltops of the Bohemian Uplands. That view stays with you all day: in the morning with your coffee, in the afternoon from the edge of the pool, and in the evening as the lights come on down in the valley. The house sits in a quiet neighbourhood right on the edge of the forest, yet the town is only a few minutes away.

The whole house is yours, including the pool and the garden. It sleeps up to seven guests. Both bedrooms are upstairs. The first has a 180 x 200 double bed and a sofa bed. The second has two large double beds, ideal for two couples or a family. On the same floor is a spacious bathroom with a corner bath and toilet. Downstairs there is a second bathroom with a shower and toilet.

The heart of the house is the living room with its fireplace, which flows into the kitchen and dining area. This is where you cook, chat and linger at the table long after dinner. The kitchen has everything you need, from a dishwasher and induction hob to an oven, microwave and fridge-freezer. Coffee lovers can choose between filter coffee and an espresso machine. On cooler evenings the fire gets lit. Firewood is provided, and there is a smart TV and Wi-Fi throughout the house.

French doors lead from the kitchen straight onto the covered veranda. The fenced garden gets plenty of sun and is safe for children. Pick fresh herbs for dinner from the herb garden, and fire up the grill for a barbecue. The star of the garden is the heated saltwater pool, available from April to November. Swimming with this view is something you get used to very quickly.

Bringing your dog? Small pets are welcome by prior arrangement. The garden is fully fenced, so your four-legged friend cannot wander off while you relax on the terrace. For walks you do not have to go far: the forest starts right next to the house and the trails lead straight into the nature reserve.

Good to know: you park on the gated property, with space for three cars, and bikes can be stored in a lockable shed. A washing machine and dryer are available on request. Fancy a keg of cold draught beer, a good bottle of wine or a stocked minibar? That can all be arranged for an extra charge.

Right from the house you can walk straight into the protected nature reserve. A trail leads up to the summit of Vysoký Ostrý, where a viewing platform looks out over the Elbe Valley and the Porta Bohemica. A thermal open-air pool is within walking distance, and the ruins of Střekov Castle perch on a rock above the river. The zoo in Ústí is always a hit with kids. A one-hour drive away lies Bohemian Switzerland National Park, with its sandstone rock formations and the famous Pravčická Gate. Dresden, Königstein Fortress and the Bastei are easy day trips, and Prague is an hour and a half away. In winter you can ski in Telnice, 18 kilometres away, with slopes for every level and cross-country trails.

And at the end of the day? You are back in the garden, glass in hand, watching the light drift slowly across the valley.
