A warm bath under the stars, with nothing but forest all around. In winter with snow on the branches, in summer after a long walk as the evening slowly cools. That’s the feeling of this cosy holiday home in a quiet valley on the eastern side of the Giant Mountains. Walking trails start right at the door, and several ski areas are a short drive away. There’s room for fifteen people across three separate apartments. Ideal if you’re travelling with a few families or friends and still want everyone to have a place of their own.

Each apartment has its own door off the shared living area. Behind it are two bedrooms: one with a double bed and a pull-out bed, and one with two single beds. Every apartment also has its own bathroom and toilet. The ground-floor apartment is step-free, bathroom included. A connecting door links the two bedrooms there, which is handy with young children or when the grandparents come along. Upstairs are the other two apartments, each with a small hallway and a bathroom with one sink for the grown-ups and one for the little ones.

Everyone comes together in the spacious living and dining room. The wood-burning stove is lit, there’s a TV, and the play corner has toys ready to go. There’s a full kitchen on each floor, with a fridge-freezer, dishwasher, hob, oven and microwave. For coffee there’s a filter coffee maker and a Dolce Gusto, plus a toaster. Nobody gets in each other’s way, even when everyone wants breakfast at the same time. There’s also a washing machine, which comes in handy after a snowball fight or a walk along muddy forest paths.

The star of the show is outside: a wood-fired hot tub with massage jets and LED lighting, big enough for six to eight people. It’s in use all year round. You fill it yourselves and heat it with the firewood that’s ready for you. On the terrace with barbecue you can eat outdoors, while the children toast sausages at the fire pit. The house has its own sandpit, and the playground next door has swings and a slide. If you fancy some sport, the sports grounds next to the house have tennis, beach volleyball and football.

Wi-Fi and parking at the house are free, and an extra car can go in a car park nearby. There’s storage for skis and bikes, and a boot dryer means dry feet the next morning. For the little ones there are cots, high chairs, a baby bath, a potty and stair gates. Your dog is welcome too.

Winter sports fans are spoilt for choice. The Žacléř-Arrakis ski area is about a kilometre away. Mladé Buky is around 12 kilometres away, and SkiResort Černá hora-Pec, the largest ski resort in the Czech Republic, is just over 18 kilometres away. Pec pod Sněžkou and Malá Úpa are also easy to reach. Cross-country skiers will find trails in the area.

In summer you can walk from the front door through the forest to Stachelberg fortress and the Eliška lookout tower. The loop is five kilometres and works with a pushchair too. By car you’re quickly at the summer toboggan run in Mladé Buky, the treetop walk in Janské Lázně or the mountain bike trails around Trutnov. Sněžka can be climbed on foot, or you can take the cable car from Pec. For a day trip, the rock town of Adršpach and the safari park in Dvůr Králové are well worth it. On hot days you can swim in the forest pool at Retropark Sejfy, six kilometres away.
