Pocátky - Villa

There are nine metres of air above the living room. Two storeys high, with a double-sided fireplace in the middle and a hydro massage bath that fits six people at once.

The house sits on a five thousand square metre estate in Vysočina, the Czech highlands, five kilometres from the small town of Počátky. Three detached villas stand there among gardens and two ponds, alongside a glass pavilion housing a heated pool. This is the largest of the three at 250 square metres, and it is built around a single idea. You come here to slow down without having to arrange anything for it.

You sleep in five bedrooms, all with a double bed and most with their own shower and toilet. Three are on the ground floor, two of them with a door straight onto the terrace. Two more upstairs, each with its own bathroom. Nobody has to draw lots for the best room.

There are two kitchens. An open one with oven, dishwasher, induction hob, microwave and a professional coffee machine for everyday cooking. And a teppanyaki griddle with room for ten people around it while the cooking happens in front of them. If you would rather eat outside, there is a summer kitchen with a grill.

Ayurveda here is not just a label. There are two treatment rooms, massage chairs with a hundred and eighty programmes, and a four metre swim spa with counter-current in the garden. The heated pool measures ten by three metres, sits inside the glass pavilion and stays open all year, even when it freezes outside.

The entire ground floor is step-free. That makes this one of the few houses in its class where someone with limited mobility can simply come along. Plus wifi, washing machine and dryer, and parking at the door with a charging point.

If you are coming for the quiet, this is the place. The Svatá Kateřina spa resort is nine kilometres away and serves ayurvedic food. Telč, twenty kilometres further, is on the UNESCO list and exactly the right size for an afternoon of wandering with coffee under the arcades. Beyond that it is mostly forest and silence.

And then the evenings. Fire lit, bath full, and nine metres of nothing above your head.
